What Sparked my Love for Pipes and Pipe Tobacco?
I want to share with you the story about how I got interested in pipe smoking in the first place. So, I have loved pipes for years, since I was in high school. No, I didn't smoke pipes in high school but I did have a neighbor who would stand out on his from lawn and smoke a pipe. I loved the smell. I would go outside just to smell the pipe.
I vividly remember being outside on a crisp Saturdays in the fall raking leaves with my father and seeing the piper light his pipe. The smell was intoxicating. It was like nothing I had smelled before. I would take long breaks from my leaf raking duties to watch him, which did not make my father too happy. He wore a cardigan sweater and dress pants. He smoked slowly, taking puffs that caused the smoke to create a halo around his head. After 15 - 20 minutes he would dump out his pipe and go inside but the wonderful aroma lingered.
Around the same time (maybe freshman year of high school) I became very interested in Sherlock Holmes. I remember having to read the Hound of the Baskervilles going into 9th grade. It became one of my favorite books. I felt connected to Sherlock and pictured him smoking his pipes the way the pipe across the street did. Of course, at the time I had no idea that what Holmes was smoking probably smelled nothing like the sweet aromatics that the piper smoked. But at that point I knew nothing about pipes or pipe tobacco, just that I loved the smell and look of it. I became inspired to learn all that I possibly could about pipes, all thanks to the piper and Sherlock.
