Smoking A Pipe

Here's what its all about. Let's smoke a pipe!

Smoking a pipe is completely different from smoking a cigar or cigarette.

The best way to understand how to smoke your pipe and with the straw analogy.  When you draw in on the pipe, picture yourself sipping the tobacco as it through a straw. You don't want to be sucking but rather sipping.

Next, you should puff enough so that the pipe doesn't go out but not so much that the tobacco burns so hot that it either tastes bitter or you suffer the dreaded tongue burn.

There is no "right" amount of time to pause between puffs. Many pipe smokers average somewhere between 10-40 seconds between puffs but you can't really go by averages. You need to develop your own rhythm. Believe it or not, the puffing generally comes pretty. You will know right off the bat if you are puffing too quickly or too often. When you are puffing too frequently the bowl will really start to heat up.

Sipping

Puffing

Another thing to remember is that pipe smoking is not about sucking in a much nicotine as possible in the shortest amount of time so that your boss won't yell at you for taking long smoke breaks. On the contrary, pipe smoking is meant to be slow, to be a process. The smoke is meant to be savored not sucked down.

Now, I am not talking about nicotine content here, but rather making a comparison between the way someone smokes a cigarette versus a pipe. There are plenty of pipe tobaccos out there that supply a huge nicotine hit, if that's your thing.

The key to enjoying your pipe is to smoke it when you can commit 15-45 minutes to it. There is little enjoyment in packing and lighting a pipe only to smoke it for 3-5 minutes.

Savor the Process

How Long Should a Bowl Last?

This is a difficult question to answer because there are so many factors that go into the duration of a smoke. These factors include, size of the bowl, packing of the bowl, speed of puffs, tamping, and type of tobacco.

Generally, a bowl should last between 15- 45 minutes. Now, I said generally because of the various factors listed above. If your pipe has a very small bowl you might only get 10 minutes of out it.

According to the Guiness Book of Works Records, the record for smoking a pipe for the longest time without relighting belongs to Dr. Lubomir Cinka of the Czech Republic. During the 2001 World Cup Pipe Smoking Championship, Dr. Cinka smoked for 3 hours 4 minutes and 35 seconds without relighting his pipe!

Do it Often and Enjoy!

As with everything, practice makes perfect. The key is to keep going, don't give up. Eventually, it clicks and it all becomes effortless and amazing.

Pipe smoking connects us with the past, to a simpler time. It helps us recenter and reflect on our present and future.

“I believe that pipe smoking contributes to a somewhat calm and objective judgement in all human affairs.”

-Albert Einstein, 1950
